Basic Info
Name:Lavender Brown
Bio
The Basics

Character Name: Lavender Brown
PB: Ashley Scott

Age: 20
Birthday: February 7th, 1980
Wand: 10 3/7 inches, hazel, unicorn tail
House in School: Gryffindor
Bloodline: Half-Blood

Political View: Her mother was killed by Death Eaters, and therefore would never be in support of any of their actions. She is neither pro-Registry, nor against, as she chooses to ignore many of the political happenings in order to shield herself from unhappy memories.

Appearance

Height: 5’7
Weight: 110
Build: Skinny
Eyes: Hazely blue green
Hair: Brown and short. She occasionally curls it, but it is usually straight.
Dress style: She is a very trendy witch, generally wearing Muggle clothing or very stylish wizarding clothes. She prefers clothes that one might generally term ‘risky.’
Defining Marks: Lavender bloomed into be a beautiful young woman after awkward pre-teen years. She has never been completely happy with her appearance, due to much teasing about gawkiness and being made fun of in public school before she went to Hogwarts. No matter how many stares she gets when she strides about in her clothing, she does not believe that she is attractive, and is always trying to improve her appearance – therefore constantly changing her hair styles as though it would make a big difference. She has a little splay of freckles along her nose, but they are not very distinct.

Personality

Lavender Brown has difficulty understanding what is going on in people around her unless they, like her, wear their emotions on their sleeves. She likes being around people who are open about themselves. Yet she is not willing to share details (though she will share the emotions) about herself that are too serious or not on the lighthearted side. She would tend to either over dramatize issues that are of little importance to her, and hide away issues that are really big to her, making her sound like someone who is constantly whining. The exception to this are her issues with men. She will share those things with any other person that she gets along with since, although she might not take it, she really does crave advice concerning that ‘other species.’ One of the reasons she has so much trouble with men is that there are very few that she has met who are so open about their emotions themselves, and therefore she is constantly failing to meet their needs or wants beyond the physical nature (gold “My Sweetheart” necklace, anyone?).
One of Lavender’s strengths is that she is hard to deter (or was, before the death of her mother). Perhaps this is the most Gryffindor-like aspect of her personality. In a way, this does translate to courage in her character, though she does not think of herself as a courageous person. Lavender is also an encourager, though she uses encouragement to the extreme of giving excessive flattery.

Psychology

Introvert/Extrovert Lavender is extroverted, since she gains energy from people and attention. She often finds herself causing drama in her own life and others for this need for energy. Even though the death of her mother brought quite a bit of trauma to Lavender’s life, she sometimes hides her own pain in creating drama to take her mind off of it. It’s a terrible cycle in her life, since it generally brings more pain to her, but the ability to momentarily forget it brings euphoria to Lavender.

Boggart is? Explain. The Grim. She was always terrified of death, and since the death of her mother by DEers, she is sure that death is right around her door.

Patronus--can they produce one? What is it and why does it have that form? Lavender struggled to learn to produce a Patronus while in the DA. It was not until the very end of her 7th year, right before her Mother died, that she produced her first Corporeal Patronus. It was in the shape of a humming bird, symbolizing her desire for beauty and a flitting sort of lifestyle. After the death of her mother, however, she could not gather the happiness or joy required to bring it forth. Probably if she produces a patronus again it will be a different creature – something more somber.

Sexuality

Lavender is straight, but finds men to be quite frustrating. She has not had a real boyfriend since Ron Weasley, since the breaking out of the war made most of her world spin out of control. She finds men attractive but does not trust them very much, and does not quite understand them. Lavender has never been able to act as herself around men, and has never had a friendship with a male. This has led to a little bit of confusion about her sexuality, but, as with most deep subjects, she prefers to not worry about it. She recognizes that most men see her more as someone who is ‘snoggable’ rather than interesting in any other way.

Lavender is also a terrible tease and a shameless flirt, leading men to believe she'll go a lot farther than she will. She lost her virginity to a one-night stand with a muggle man (or so she thought) in Paris (February 2000). She had been very drunk and taken advantage of. It was not at all what she has expected, and is a little bit scarred from the experiance.
Lifestyle

Occupation: Currently doing a lot of grunt work for Ollivander in helping him re-open the wand shop. If all goes well she will begin to be Ollivander’s wand making apprentice.

Residence: She grew up at the Brown’s Lichfield estate in England, but she and her father both moved away to Paris, France, to live with Ian Brown’s Aunt Marigold and Zinnia after the death of Camilla. Lavender, Ian, and Zinnia all wanted to be together, but away from Lichfield. Even though Lavender enjoys France, she feels a longing for England. She has tentatively accepted a job offer from Ollivander, and plans on renting a room at the Leaky Cauldron or crashing with a friend until she decides that she will keep the job. Than she would rent an apartment in Diagon Alley in order to be close to work, and well within the wizarding community.

Financial Status: Her father has a comfortable income, though they used up most of the savings on Camilla’s funeral and an extended leave of absence to France. Ian Brown has been providing Lavender with enough money, but he is trying to encourage her to get on her own feet. If he decides to stay in France, he is going to split the money for the selling of the Brown’s Lichfield estate between himself, and his two daughters.
Family

Parents? Ian Brown from Lichfield, and Camilla Georgetree from Bath. Camilla and Ian were both Muggle born. They met in Gryffindor and fell in love at the end of their 7th year. Though they both loved the magical world, they ended up building most of their life in the Muggle world when the first war broke out, believing it safer.

Siblings? Zinnia Brown, 26, passed on the love of Divination to her younger sister. Zinnia was an even more die-hard fan of Sybil Trelawney and would send owls to Lavender from time to time after her graduation, asking her sister to request Sybil’s interpretation of various things that she was divining. She moved to France after graduating with an O in Divination in her N.E.W.Ts and is serving as an apprentice to Madame Clemenceau of Paris. She works primarily with palm-readings and tea-leafs, her skills with tarot cards being significantly lower than she would like. Zinnia does have real skill in Divination, and her skill is quite a bit more clearer and easier to discern then that of Madame Trelawney. After the death of her mother, Zinnia has begun to live much more of a reclusive lifestyle, spending most of her time with Great Aunt Marigold (muggle) instead of the handsome Ministry of Magic employee Edouard that she had filled many hours with before.

Family dynamics--do they get along? Opposite sides of the war? Accept their child's magical talent? Pressure for 'pure blood' marriage? Lavender’s parents have always been very supportive of her. She could hardly do any wrong in their eyes. However, with their constant assurances that she was perfect, Lavender has had trouble clearly identifying anything in her life that needed changing. The four Browns all got along swimmingly, and since they were both such suave and charming people, Lavender hardly ever felt embarrassed by her parents while growing up. The Browns were magical people, and though they lived among Muggles they made trips to the magical world at least once a week.
It was on August 2nd, 1999, when Camilla Brown was murdered by death eaters in Hogsmead, visiting a friend from her Hogwarts days for tea. All facts gathered from the scene of the crime have established that it was probably not a random killing. Ian worries more and more about his daughters’ safety, even with the war ended.
History from student days at Hogwarts to the present time

Lavender was very glad to meet someone so much like her when she entered the dorm room for the first time. Hermione Granger was not the sort of person she would like to be friends with – if it had not been for Parvati Patil, she would have been bored out of her mind in that room. She and Lavender did their best to try to get Hermione to ‘relax’ during the beginning of their time at school, but gave up. They both (and especially Lavender) could not understand her ability to get on so well with Harry and Ron, and stayed mostly to themselves, with Padma occasionally coming in and out of their Hogwarts twosome. Lavender was a bit jealous of Parvati and Padma for having each other, since her older sister was too busy to spend much time with her, and than graduated.
Lavender was glad she was sorted into Gryffindor, which was the house of her father and mother, but a little disappointed that it separated her from Zinnia who was in Hufflepuff. She was anxious to learn magic, but found that her heart for it was much larger than her aptitude, and ended up lowering her own expectations of herself (who could compete with Hermione Granger, anyways?) Instead of studying, she enjoyed spending time with Parvati and filled the too-few non-class related hours with plenty of gossip and useless chatter over their various schoolmates. ‘Pairing’ was a fun game with Parvati – trying to guess who would end up with who. Lavender had not expected that she would end up going for a Weasley. She had liked Seamus Finnigan, and gone to the Yule Ball with him in her fourth year. That relationship was very short lived, however. Lavender Brown was never very good with boys – except with snogging and flirting. She had no idea how they worked or how to treat them properly.
She went ahead and gave relationships another go with Ron Weasley. She had begun to pay him attention when she had been given the chance to attend the Yule ball with him (though she had been going with Seamus already) and both she and Parvati could think of plenty of reasons that she should like him at the beginning of their relationship (though it’s terrible, Lavender knows that a lot of his charm was his closeness to Harry and his close calls to fame), but by the time Lavender broke up with him they could not understand what they had been thinking! Yet, Lavender never quite got over her relationship with Ron. She felt that she had been terribly embarrassed by having the frizzy-haired book worm Hermione Granger steal her boyfriend away. It was not a fun time in their dorm room… Lavender was quite glad that Hermione ended up not attending Hogwarts in their 7th year.
Lavender has not displayed a lot of the Gryffindor-like qualities that she would have liked to be able to add to her list of traits. However she was nice enough to help out Hagrid with his blast-ended skrewts, and she was in the DA after being convinced by Hermione that Harry was not bonkers, but never did much with the skills she learned.
She did stay at Hogwarts after Dumbledore’s death. Her parents had given her the chance, and she and Parvati had both decided together that they would stay. It was not an easy last year, but Lavender made it through with as many giggles and jokes that she and Parvati could manage to make with each other (which was not many). Lavender was still unsure of what to do with herself, career wise, at the end of her 7th year. She took a job at a muggle supermarket for two months, but quit in the beginning of August when tragedy struck her family.
Her mother died in early August from an attack with Death Eaters. She had been about to apply to get a job in the Ministry of Magic alongside Parvati, but everything changed when her mother died. Lavender became reclusive for the first time of her life, living in the Lichfield manor house she had grown up, and spending time only with muggles. She never answered Parvati’s owls forgot to respond to Parvati’s letters and inquiries, and has not communicated with her in a long time.
After a month of seclusion in Lichfield, Zinnia managed to convince her with a huge barrage of owls that she had divined that Lavender and her father had to come and stay with her in Paris. Lavender came, since the life of a hermit did not suit her at all. She began to bloom a bit in the magical community there, being a bit of a celebrity for a few months, having been a classmate of Harry Potter, and dorm-mate of Hermione Granger, as well as being Ron Weasley’s ex-girlfriend. The French wizarding community was more than familiar with these names from newspaper articles covering the Second war. These snippets of attention did enough to perk Lavender back to being most of herself, though she is certainly more moody and less giggly since the death of her mother.
One day in late June, Lavender was waiting for Zinnia and Edouard to meet her at a café in downtown Paris. There was an old man sitting near her, and though he looked much older, sadder, and drawn out that he had when she was eleven, Lavender recognized him. He recognized her, too, saying “10 3/7 inches, hazel, unicorn tail. A bit springy, wasn’t it?” When she had nodded a yes, Ollivander had walked over to her table and sat down. It was a nice surprise for both of them to find another British wizard in the middle of France.
Somehow Lavender found herself spilling the beans about why she was in France. She didn’t know why, but she felt as though she could tell Ollivander about the death of her mother, and how she had been driven away by the inability to be normal around all of her friends.
Ollivander was a bit closed mouthed about what had been going on in his life recently, but said offhandedly that he had been doing a bit of experimentation with Abraxan feathers in wands. Lavender remembered those delightful creatures that had pulled Madame Maxine’s carriage, and the two of them struck up a lively chat about magical properties of unicorns, phoenixes, dragons and more. Ollivander talked about his own experience with the creatures, and mentioned how it was becoming more and more difficult for him to find unicorns, him being a rather old man now. Lavender knew he was watching her carefully, and she wasn’t exactly sure why. However, they made plans to meet up again that weekend (Lavender was lonely enough to enjoy meeting an old man), and after another discussion about wands, Ollivander offered her the chance to be an apprentice in his shop. She would start out helping him reorganize and clean, as his shop had not been open for several years, and than if things went well, he would begin teaching her the craft of wand making. Lavender had never before considered a career such as this, and yet somehow it seemed right. She would have the chance to work with beautiful creatures, and create beautiful wands. Now her biggest worry is that she will fail miserably at this job. Ollivander seems to believe in her, however, and so she will give it a try.
Both Zinnia and her father will be sad to see her go, but know that the bloom she has had in France will not survive if she stays there.
